Shintaro Uramaru

Born in Saga Prefecture in 1993. Suffered sexual abuse from relatives during childhood. Around age 17, when confiding his past to a friend who shared the same experience, he felt their open wounds begin to heal as if being stitched together. Since then, using wounds as a motif, he has created works employing needle and thread as a means to sew together severed connections. Through embroidery and objects created by stitching together photographs of bodies transferred onto fabric, as well as performances using his own body as a medium, he scoops up memories and emotions threatening to slip away, reweaving them into his work.
