Following our book fair held this January, Art Center NEW will host another book fair on October 3 and 4. This time, the theme is “picnic.”

Zines have long been a medium that anyone can freely make, reproduce, distribute, and pass on. They have embodied a DIY spirit and forms of individual practice that exist independently of established institutions. In recent years, however, what we call zines have increasingly circulated as art books and collectible objects, with their value more often measured by the market.

While we may feel uneasy about this shift, we ourselves cannot live entirely outside capitalism. We need money not only to make a living, but also to continue creating. And when someone makes something wonderful, we often find ourselves wishing that their work would be properly valued and compensated.

Precisely because it is difficult to imagine a world beyond capitalism, we want to continue building small practices within the world we live in.

A picnic, after all, does not take place in a space prepared for us by someone else. It is something we create temporarily together, with each person bringing their own food, tools, and other things they need.

We hope this book fair can be something similar: a place where people bring together books, zines, and little press publications, creating opportunities for new encounters and conversations.

Through books, we hope to create a space where people can connect with one another in an open and informal way. We would be very happy to create this space together with you.

We look forward to seeing you there.
