「Arts and Publics – How to create and How to connect-」

We will host a talk event featuring contemporary artist Yusuke Asai, who has worked extensively beyond museums and galleries, engaging in numerous public-space exhibitions and participatory workshops with local communities.

Starting from his perspectives on presenting artworks in public spaces, the conversation will explore broader questions such as “What is art?” and “What is publicness?” It will also touch on his upcoming exhibition, Dialectical Landscape, scheduled to open at Art Center NEW from June 20 (details to be announced soon).

Through this talk, we aim to examine new possibilities for collaboration between art and society, as well as between art and the corporate sector.

Guest Artist Profile

Yusuke Asai
Born in Tokyo in 1981, Yusuke Asai creates paintings using a wide range of materials and methods. His practice includes “mud paintings” made with soil and water collected from the site, “Masking Plants” drawn with marker on masking tape, and “Blue Blood Paintings” using Prussian blue derived from deer blood.

In recent years, he has also resumed working seriously with ceramics, a practice he returned to during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moving fluidly between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, he continues to deepen expressions unique to working with earth. His works, created from soil—the source of life—carry traces of the diverse microorganisms that once inhabited it, as well as the vitality of plants that have sprouted from it, embodying the very cycles of life rooted in each place.
