Join us for a cyanotype workshop led by NEW AIR artist Vani Bhushan!
Vani Bhushan is a photographer from India, currently based in New York. She usually creates her work in the darkroom.
During her current residency in Yokohama, she has developed an interest in the Japanese architecture around her. In this workshop, participants will explore ways of expressing these architectural images through cyanotype, an alternative photographic process also known as blueprinting.
1、First, participants will create small three-dimensional structures inspired by the architecture around them, using simple everyday materials such as toothpicks and beans.
2、The structures will then be placed on photosensitive paper—paper coated with a light-sensitive chemical—and exposed to sunlight. The shadows of the structures will be captured on the paper, creating photographic-like artworks.
In this workshop, participants will experience cyanotype, one of the earliest photographic processes, while exploring how a three-dimensional structure such as architecture can be transformed into an image.
No previous experience is necessary! All materials will be provided. After the workshop, each participant can take home the work they created.

Vani Bhushan (b. 1998, New Delhi) is a photographer and darkroom printer based in New York. Bhushan holds an MFA in Photography from the Yale School of Art and was a Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM) Fellow at Yale in 2024–2025. Her work has been exhibited at Webber Gallery (Los Angeles), Gladstone Gallery (New York), Green Hall Gallery (New Haven), Khoj Studios (New Delhi), and the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), among others. She is the recipient of the 2025 John Ferguson Weir Award and the 2024 Alice Kimball English Travel Fellowship. Her practice has been featured by Aperture magazine, and she was named to It’s Nice That’s Ones to Watch list for 2025.
