NEW AIR 2026 is the first Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program organized by Art Center NEW. While international exchange has become increasingly active across Asia in recent years, opportunities for artists to create and present their work abroad still vary greatly depending on their country or region. In response to these circumstances, this AIR program launched an open call primarily for artists of Asian origin who show strong potential for future international engagement and recognition.
The open call received 195 applications from across Asia. Following a selection process conducted by Aomi Okabe (Art Critic),Tomohiro Hikoe (Professor, Yokohama National University), and Hiroyuki Hattori (Director, Aomori Contemporary Art Centre [ACAC]), two artists were selected: Vani Bhushan from India and Lim Sokchanlina from Cambodia.
The two selected artists will stay at the residency facilities operated by the Koganecho Area Management Center from July to September 2026, using Art Center NEW as their base for research and production.
Art Center NEW is located in the rapidly redeveloping Minato Mirai district, while Koganecho retains a strong sense of local history and culture. Through their residency across these two contrasting areas of Yokohama, the artists are expected to develop new perspectives and relationships through their artistic practice.
In September, the artists will present their work through an Open Studio and a Final Exhibition as part of NEW PLATFORM – Alternative JAPAN –.

Vani Bhushan (b. 1998, New Delhi) is a photographer and darkroom printer based in New York. Bhushan holds an MFA in Photography from the Yale School of Art and was a Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM) Fellow at Yale in 2024–2025. Her work has been exhibited at Webber Gallery (Los Angeles), Gladstone Gallery (New York), Green Hall Gallery (New Haven), Khoj Studios (New Delhi), and the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), among others. She is the recipient of the 2025 John Ferguson Weir Award and the 2024 Alice Kimball English Travel Fellowship. Her practice has been featured by Aperture magazine, and she was named to It’s Nice That’s Ones to Watch list for 2025.
Lina works across documentary and conceptual practices with photography, video, installation and performance. Using different strategies, he calls attention to a variety of social, political, geopolitical, economic, cultural and environmental changes in Cambodia in relation to the globe and in the notion of what power, economic, and history play roles in our everyday living and contemporary present. His works usually involve researching to discover, unpack and document the history of the present and the imagination of the future by learning from the past.
Lina is an active member of the artist collective, Stiev Selapak since 2007-2024 which founded and co-runs Sa Sa Art Projects since 2010-2024, a long-term initiative committed to the development of contemporary visual arts landscape in Cambodia. Together with his collective, they teach, initiate, and innovate art programs facilitating a growing and critically conscious community. For the last 3 years, he taught contemporary photography at Sa Sa Art Projects.
The two resident artists will hold an open studio at Art Center NEW, offering visitors a chance to see their creative process as they develop works for the upcoming exhibition, opening on September 11.
The studio will also be open as a space for visitors to meet and engage with both artists, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and connect with them directly.

We invite you to discover the practices of the two residence artists, shaped through their two-month stay in Yokohama, presented alongside an art fair dedicated to Japan’s diverse and evolving alternative art scene.

A cross-talk featuring the NEW AIR 2026 jury members and the participating resident artists will be held as part of the program.
In addition to presentations by the resident artists on their practices and works, the jury members will share their impressions of each artist, highlighting the aspects of their work that they found particularly compelling and distinctive.
The event will also provide an opportunity for discussion, with the artists reflecting on the experiences and insights they gained through their residency and process, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Aomi Okabe
Artistic Director of the exhibitions of the Maison de la Culture du Japon in Paris 2014-2020 and Director of the International Affaires Department of the Committee for “Ueno, a Global Capital of Culture” since 2018-2021. Aomi Okabe was a professor at the Musashino Art University for 12 years, after working as Chief Curator at the Mercien Karuizawa Museum for 5 years. She was also a lecturer and Visiting Professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts for two years and spent a year as the Visiting Researcher at the New York University. Her main achievements include being co-commissioner of “le Japon des avant-gardes 1910-70”exhibition in Pompidou Center(1986), primary judge of the biennale of Art films ( 1990, 92, Pompidou Center ), curator of “Georges Rousse, Hanshin ArtＡ Project” (1995), curator of “Georges Rousse in Miyagi”(2013), and since 2016 at the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris, curator of exhibitions “Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi”, “Rei Naito” and “Tomoko Yoneda” etc.. She graduated from the International Christian University in Tokyo, has a master degree from the Sorbonne University and a Diplôme de recherche approfondie from the Ecole du Louvre. She realized the documentary film of “Atsuko Tanaka, another Gutai” and her publications include “Art, Women and Images-Glocal Women” which is a feminist analysis of international women artists in photography and video and also ”Curiosity on Arts- Real Muséologie “, the initiation of the contemporary Japanese arts, etc.. She founded the interview web site for the Japanese Art’s scene; http://apm.musabi.ac.jp/imsc/cp/.
Tomohiro Hikoe
Ph.D., Faculty of Letters, Université Paris IV (Paris-Sorbonne). Professor at the Institute of Urban Innovation, Yokohama National University. Specializes in early 20th-century French literature. In recent years, his research has focused on the relationship between Le Corbusier and literary figures, exploring questions of the city and literature. His publications include “Louis-Ferdinand Céline’s Engineering Écriture: Céline and Le Corbusier’s America,” Limitrophe, no. 7 (2025), among others.
Hiroyuki Hattori
Curator. After completing a Master’s degree in Architecture at Waseda University, he worked for approximately ten years in artist-in-residence programs, including at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC). After working independently as a freelance curator, he has been involved in arts education at Akita University of Art and Tokyo University of the Arts, among others.
Since around 2010, he has continued to engage with practitioners across Asia, developing collaborative, process-oriented projects. Major curated projects include Media / Art Kitchen (Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok, Aomori); the Japan Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, Cosmo-Eggs (2019); Cultivating Successive Wisdoms at Akita City Cultural Creation Center (2021); and Art Site Nagoya Castle, Found Perspectives for Tasty Sightseeing (2024), etc.
